New Years Day on Bald Mountain at Sun Valley Resort
We just returned from a fabulous four day ski trip to Ketchum, Idaho (Sun Valley). We bought Mountain Collective passes last spring with the intentions of making some long weekend ski trips outside of Utah this season. Stop #1 on the tour was Sun Valley and we had so much fun.
Ketchum is a cool small town - we stayed at that Tamarack Lodge... not too ritzy like the accomodations at Sun Valley just down the road. It was perfect for us - close to the mountain, walking distance to everything, and had a hot tub. That's all we need for an awesome trip.
The ski resort (Bald Mountain) was really impressive. Good vertical (3400 feet) with consistent pitch. We skied two full lift-served days (our first days riding the lifts since spring 2014 - all 50 days last season were human-powered). Despite the fact that it hadn't snowed in a week by the time we arrived, the snow conditions were excellent thanks for the COLD temperatures and world-class grooming. There were no crowds, even though this was one of the biggest skiing weekends of the year.
A major reason we loved Sun Valley is that the ski area is uphill-friendly outside of operating hours. We skinned to the top of the mountain all 4 days to get in a solid workout and our aerobic fix. We never even broke out our running shoes during the entire trip.
Our favorite bar / restaurant in Ketchum was Lefty's. Good food and cheap beer in a classic ski town atmosphere.
There is a 100% chance we'll be back in Sun Valley next year (if not this spring!).
