Training Staples

On a recent blog post, someone asked if we drank coffee or alcohol. We don't, but that question inspired Andrea to write a post on some of our staple training foods. We already covered breakfast a few weeks ago (Breakfast of Champions). I would say overall we eat a pretty healthy, balanced diet, and that has been a contributing factor to how well we are running. We do have some vices, although we are making strides to cut back on the junk even more...

[The rest of this post was written by Andrea]

Jake and I have recently given up carbonated drinks (post coming soon on Jake's first three weeks without Diet Mountain Dew!). Because water is just too bland to drink all the time, these Hawaiian Punch Singles (from Family Dollar) have been a great alternative. We put two singles with one Emergen-C to get some extra electrolytes and vitamins in 32 oz bottles. My favorite is probably the Lemon Berry Squeeze.

Jake and I eat at least one 3.5 lb package a week of broccoli florets from Costco. They are so much better than those terrible broccoli cut packages that consist of mostly stems. Putting a little shredded cheese on top doesn't hurt either! We eat tons of steamed vegetables, for lunch and dinner everyday.

This ground turkey has also become quite a staple in our diets because it is super lean and we can get it for only $2.29 for 1.25 lbs at Costco. Tough to beat that. Ground beef tastes better, but with the right seasoning you can't even tell a difference between the two. When chicken breasts are on sale, we'll buy those and alternate between the chicken and ground turkey.

Speaking of the right seasoning, the Weber Gourmet Burger Seasoning is awesome. It can make pretty much anything taste good. Although we wouldn't recommend taking it on camping trips or else a bear might just try to eat all your food (see JMT Day 1).

We eat macaroni and cheese the night before every races. For some reason, the taste of whole wheat pasta doesn't taste right for mac and cheese to us. The Garden Delight noodles are still very healthy, with one serving of vegetables per 4 oz serving. In terms of cheese, it's hard to beat Velveeta.

Quakes are a great afternoon snack. I have been known to eat a bag of these in one sitting, but I don't feel too bad about it with only 420 calories per bag. I really like the cheddar flavor; not much a fan of the other kinds.

As runners, it's very important to make sure we are getting all of our vitamins. Jake and I both take women's vitamins (for the iron). I have to take an additional iron pill because I was borderline anemic last year. I can definitely tell a difference and would recommend all runners to consult with a doctor to make sure they have the proper iron levels.

There have been an abundance of studies showing that chocolate milk is an excellent recovery drink. We try to drink it within 30 minutes after hard workouts. Disregard the manager's special stickers - we're also cheap! :-)

Candy and ice cream are our vices. Running 70-140 miles a week justifies some treats, right? We have been known to have 10+ cartons of ice cream at a time (we eat ice cream every night). Kroger's Jammed Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream has been our go-to for the last year and a half. [Note from Jake: Andrea took away all the candy a few days ago (bagged it up and hid it) so we can be fast and light for our target fall races! We're really trying to cut back in this category!]

If you have any new staples that we should try, we are open to suggestions!

September Training

The training calendar for September

September was one of the best blocks of training Andrea and I have had in our lives. Nothing fancy, just high mileage and solid workouts. After racing quite a bit in August, we focused on getting several weeks of uninterrupted work in to prepare for the Long Beach Half Marathon (October 9th). Our OktoberFAST 5K was a nice way to kickstart the new month (hard to beat running a 5K PR!).

For the day-by-day training summary in September, check out Jake's Log and Andrea's Log.

The competition in Long Beach is going to be first class. Their elite coordinator has assembled a field of ~30 runners (20 males, 10 females) who are OTQ hopefuls (some have actually already hit the standard). We're going to have our hands full to say the least!

OktoberFAST 5K

Post race at the OktoberFAST 5K, sponsored by Saucony!

This morning Andrea and I hosted our first track race, the OktoberFAST 5K. We were going up against the St George marathon and General Conference (two VERY big events in Utah), but still had a really nice turnout. It was a really fun morning on the track with a great group of people!

Saucony was awesome enough to hook us up with official race bibs and some prizes, which we are really thankful for. They really support these kinds of small "grassroots" events, and that is why we are so happy to be representing the company.

Andrea ran another big PR, crossing the line in 17:16! That is an incredible performance on its own, and really mind blowing when you realize that it would convert to 16:55 at sea level. This is from a girl who hadn't broken 20 minutes before this year. Unbelievable! She is absolutely killing it!

I ran 15:09, which was a little short of my goal (sub 15), but its 13 seconds faster than I ran last month, and realistically its now my 5K PR, as the 15:04 I ran earlier this summer was probably a slightly short course. The nice thing about running on the track is that there are no distance discrepancies! I've now broken both my 5K and 10K PRs in solo time trials over the past week, so that's another step in the right direction.

Overall it was just a really fun morning with a great group of runners. We had some friends help out with pictures and timing which was greatly appreciated, and it was nice to have some family and friends out there cheering as well.

This was our last little tuneup before the Long Beach Half Marathon. Next weekend Andrea and I will fly to California for a little taste of a flat, fast course at sea level.

I've posted a bunch of photos below, but you can find the whole gallery by clicking here: OktoberFAST 5K Pictures.

Here's the results... many of the runners have posted their individual race recaps, which I've linked...

Fall is coming...

Fall colors are starting to show up in the Wasatch

The seasons are changing. I wore gloves on my run this morning for the first time since June (perhaps its crazy that I was still wearing gloves in June?). Andrea's parents spent the last couple days of their vacation with us in SLC. We took them up to Brighton for a hike on Saturday afternoon... the leaves are starting to change colors. Hopefully summer (or at least fall) will hold out for a while longer. By this time last year, I was itching to ski... this year, I'm itching to ski, but I'm not even considering it until after marathon season is over... and hopefully that will mean mid-January for both Andrea and I.

Andrea will most likely be switching to the full marathon at Philly and will be joining a group of about a dozen women there shooting for the elusive OTQ. We are both healthy, extremely fit, and running very strong right now. In 2 weeks we'll fly to California to race a sea-level half marathon. It was tough to skip the XTerra Nationals this weekend (we both could potentially have won some serious $$$) but we're keeping the big picture front and center... 2:18 / 2:45 are the targets and we're giving it everything we have to make those dreams a reality.

There's some yellow in there... on the Park City side of the mountains, some orange and red is creeping into the picture

Fisher Towers and Onion Creek

Fisher Towers

On our third day in Moab (see Day 1 and Day 2) we headed east on 128 and checked out some other cool areas along the Colorado River. First we did a hike out in the Fisher Towers area. After lunch, we went a few miles down the Onion Creek road (crossing the creek about a dozen times in my jeep) and went for a cool hike through the "Onion Creek Narrows." On the way out we attempted to keep our shoes dry, but on the return Andrea just decided to walk directly in the creek, so naturally I followed her lead on that one!

After the hikes Andrea and I made the drive back to SLC and got back to doing things like 6 x 1 mile, while Andrea's parents stayed down in Moab for a few more days and checked out Canyonlands National Park.

The scale of this place was ridiculous!

After leaving Fisher Towers, we headed to Onion Creek...

It was tough to get good pictures in here, but you get the idea... super cool area!
